It is a beautiful day today. I am sitting in this courtyard next to a sweet babbling fountain. I am going to talk about a subject I had to learn recently. In this world we often get hurt. Sometimes it is intentional, other times it is not but it always hurts; doesn’t it? You’ve been hurt; what is the next step? Let’s back up for a minute.
I want to be friends with everyone. If you have known me, I always try my best to maintain long friendships. But I had to learn the hard way, people are human. They will let you down. I recently had an experience where a person had shut me out of their life and the rejection was painful. But within minutes of the experience, I had a tug on my heart to be open-minded. There might have been something in past experiences, allowing a person to be compelled to act a certain way. Maybe the person was afraid of being hurt or had an experience of being hurt. I had two choices to make in the moment. I could either mope around and be angry or I could asked the Lord to help me forgive this person and move on.
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” -Colossians 3:13
There is Healing in Forgiveness
Forgiveness is to not only help the other person but also to bring healing to your own heart. Anger and hurt is a heavy weight to carry within the soul. Forgiving someone instantly melts the burden. It takes bravery and strength to forgive. It was once said that forgiveness is to be a quality of maturity. The biggest illustration of forgiveness can be found in the very nature of Jesus. He was beaten. He was bullied. He was mocked and made fun of. Despite all of the hurt, Jesus chose forgiveness.
“When they came to a place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals – one on his right, the other on his left, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”-Luke 23:33-34
Like Jesus, we can either hold a grudge and walk in bitterness or be the bigger person and forgive. Even when it is hard and even when it hurts, forgiveness is a breath of fresh air. It is a healing balm for you. Take care of your tender heart. You are brave.
Have a beautiful day!
